The Education Department at Pacific Cinematheque offers film and media education to  students, teachers and other community members. It was designed with the goal of developing appreciation and passion for the art of film and an understanding of the visual media in the world around us.

History/Background Information

  • PACIFIC CINEMATHEQUE is dedicated to advancing cinema as art and as a vital means of communication. Established as a film society almost four decades ago, it is one of the most active film organizations in North America. Our Education Department provides a range of media education and video production programs designed to support critical media literacy in film-lovers of all ages.

Objectives

  • Providing intensive and engaging digital filmmaking programs, thought-provoking media literacy workshops and special screening events, through our Education Department we aim to develop an appreciation and passion for the art of film as well as an understanding of the visual media in the world around us.

  • Stimulate critical thinking in an educational setting and offer youths a means to express their creative visions through film production
  • Commission youth to tell their own stories through the use of media production that are meaningful to them
  • Offer a variety of film and media literacy workshops, special projects, and access to youth screenings at the Pacific Cinematheque theater
  • Support active and keen youth who are involved or wish to be involved in the film community
  • Spread the passion for the art of film making

  • SUMMER VISIONS  │ Summer Visions Film Institute for Youth is an award-winning digital media production program for youth aged 14 – 19 produced by our Education Department and Dream Big Productions at Templeton Secondary School. Over two weeks, video makers work in production teams to write, shoot, edit and screen a short digital video, learning video making skills as they create. │ www.summervisions.ca

      • In six weeks, youth learn how to creatively use digital video cameras and camera techniques.

  • SIGHTS & SOUNDS │ Our award-winning digital filmmaking production program is available to elementary and secondary school students, and interested community groups.
