Objectives

ArtStarts in Schools provides innovative arts programs for young people, practical resources for teachers and artists, and leadership in advocacy for arts in education.

ArtStarts envisions a society where the arts are regarded as an essential part of educating young people and a catalyst for creating innovative, engaged and contributing members of society. ArtStarts in Schools has a leadership role in transforming the way children and youth are engaged, in and through the arts, and in promoting the value of the arts in young lives.

ArtStarts’ many services—including an artists directory, bookings and tour coordination, performing arts showcase, and funding programs—contribute to the audience development of an estimated 500,000 young people in over 1,500 BC schools each year. With contracts for 1,800 performances annually featuring 100 diverse professional artists and companies, ArtStarts provides an invaluable service to artists and their young audience presenters around the province. Through artist residency programs, ArtStarts also involves children, youth, artists and teachers in challenging workshops and outreach projects that integrate the visual and performing arts into the life and culture of the classroom. ArtStarts is proud of the fact that programs and services benefit hundreds of communities throughout BC. From kindergarten to grade 12, in public and private schools across the province, ArtStarts ensures community access to music, visual arts, dance, theatre, storytelling and more. ArtStarts not only contributes to the artistic and market development of emerging and professional artists, but also to the creative and audience development of the next generation of British Columbians.
