Summary of organization/program
Big Soul Productions is an Aboriginal owned and operated television and film production company established in August 1999 by Laura J. Milliken and Jennifer Podemski. Since its inception, Toronto-based Big Soul has become a leader in Aboriginal content programming. The company is now under the sole ownership of Laura J. Milliken.
Since 1999, Big Soul has developed and produced award-winning television series, such as “Moccasin Flats,” a movie-of-the-week, “Moccasin Flats: Redemption” and numerous short films including Thomas King’s “I’m Not The Indian You Had In Mind.” Our very first prime-time comedy animation series “By The Rapids” began airing November 2008 on Aboriginal Peoples Television Network and is currently airing it’s 3rd season with season 4 in production.
Big Soul also produces high-quality music videos, promotional videos, industrials and documentaries.
With its recent move into animation, Big Soul Productions has created a digital media studio and has built an impressive slate of projects in development, including feature films, comedy and documentary series.
Big Soul Productions is committed to creating capacity in the Canadian film and television industry for Aboriginal people as they presently represent an extremely small percentage of professionals in the field. Through its custom designed media empowerment program, “Project One Generation,” Big Soul has trained more than 500 Aboriginal youth and adults across Canada in technical and creative capacities for film and television.
