Pacific Cinematheque

Summary of organization/program

Pacific Cinematheque’s Education Department offers film and media education programs and resources for youth, teachers and other community members. From intensive and engaging digital filmmaking programs to film literacy workshops and youth screenings at our theatre, we aim to foster an appreciation and passion for the art of film as well as an understanding of the impact of visual media in the world around us. We are especially committed to supporting a vibrant and active youth-in-film community in the Lower Mainland and throughout the province.

History/Background Information

Pacific Cinémathèque Pacifique was established as a film society four decades ago, and since that time has been one of the most active film organizations in North America, with more than 500 curated film exhibitions annually. We have offered filmlovers more international cinema, director retrospectives, contemporary and classic Canadian filmworks, emerging talents, arthouse masterpieces, and experimental shorts and features than any other theatre in the province.

We have also built a well-established reputation as a festival venue in Vancouver, as host to the Vancouver International Film Festival, Latin American Film Festival, Out On Screen, and many others festivals each year.

Objectives

At The Cinematheque we’re dedicated to bringing you what we like to think of as essential cinema. Whether new releases, classics or rarely-seen gems, these are movie experiences that stay with you long after you’ve left the theatre: movies that inspire you by their their craft and beauty; movies that really stir the emotions; movies that make you question your assumptions; movies that give you a genuine insight into the local, national and global communities to which we belong.

Supplementing our rich body of programming are core resources like our Film Reference LibraryWest Coast Film Archive, the bi-monthly Cinematheque Program Guide, and our unique educational programs. And as an integral part of the local film community, we frequently provide the only big-screen access to some of the very best work from filmmakers throughout the province.

So if you want to create, present, learn about, or simply enjoy essential cinema experiences, we look forward to welcoming you to The Cinematheque.
